HOW TO CUT/SPLIT/MERGE/EFFECT/AUDIO VIDEO FILES USING VIRTUALDUB

In this guide I will show you how to use a well known video capturing/processing utility called VirtualDub in order to cut/split/merge video files and also how to add/remove audio in them. virtualDub is a freeware program. You can download it from here.  You don't have to install it. Just download it and extract its files into a new folder. Run VirtualDub.exe and we are ready to begin!
**Note: If your video files have Variable Bitrate (VBR) audio you may encounter syncronization problems. Full processing mode is recommended for those cases.

1. Cutting video files

First I will show you how to cut a part of a video file. Once you run VirtualDub.exe click on 'File -> Open video file...' and open the video file you want to cut. When the video file is loaded you will see two instanses of the file.

In the next image you can see the keyboard shortcuts we will use in this guide as long as the main functions of the program buttons.

2.jpg

In order to select the beginning of the video you want to cut you can either move to that point by moving the timeline cursor (1) or by pressing Ctrl+G and then entering the time of frame position of the video part (2). You can also first use the timeline cursor and then use the Prev/Next keyframe buttons to find the exact frame of the video you want.

3.jpg

Now that you have found your favourable beginning of the video click on the 'Set selection start' (1). With the same way as before you must find the frame you want your movie to end. Once you have done so click the 'Set selection end' button (2) and you will have selected a part of the video.

4.jpg

Next we must encode our new video both its video and audio parts. Click on 'Video -> Full processing mode' (1) and then click on 'Video -> Compression...' (2). Here the select the video codec you want. MPEG-4 should be fine (3).

5.jpg

After that click on 'Audio -> Full Processing mode' (1) and then select the codec you want from 'Audio -> Compression...' (2). The mp3 codec should be fine (3).

6.jpg

Finally click on 'File -> Save as AVI', select a new for the new video file and after a while depending on your video's length you will have the final video ready!

2. Spliting Video files

With VirtualDub you can also split a video in many seperate video files. The procedure is the same as above up to the part you save the final video file. Insteaf of 'Save as AVI...' select 'Save segmented AVI...' (1). When the encoding is completed select again the new part of the video you want to cut.

3. Merging Video files

Now that you have many different video files you might want to combine all of them in a new single video file. Open the first file you want through the VirtualDub menu 'File -> Open video file...' (1) and then select 'File -> Append AVI segment...' (2). This way you may select as many video files you want. Be careful the video files you want to merge must have the same resolutions, framerate etc.

Again select the video and audio codecs as shown in the first part of this guide and when you are ready click on 'File -> Save as AVI...' to encode your video.

4. Filtering video files

VirtualDub comes with a variety of filters/effects you can use on your video files. Click on 'Video -> Filters' and in the window that will appear click 'Add'. Now you can select a filter from the list (2) or load new filters that can be found around the internet. You can select as many filters as you want.

10.jpg

Through the filter window you can also crop the video file (1). Just grab the edges of the video and move them (2) or you can set manually X and Y offset.

11.jpg

When you are ready select again the video and audio codecs as shown in part 1 and then save the file from 'File -> Save as AVI...'. You can always use the two monitors to see how the video looks like before and after your editing.

5. Adding/Removing Audio in Video files

You can also remove completely the audio from a video file or add a new one of your choice. Open the video file you want and select 'Audio - > No audio' to remove the audio (1) or 'Audio -> WAV Audio...' to load a wav file in your video (2). Then you can select the video and audio codecs and save your final video file.
