LOCATION OF ONENOTE FILES AND FILE TYPES

location of OneNote files and file types

Hello,
I need to be able to teach a OneNote workshop and there is a question that I cannot get clear on:  How are OneNote files stored on the computer?  In the image below, I see a file with extension .onepkg   When I double click on this file to open, it is the recent file that I have been working on, however the date modified is listed as 2012.

If I look in the backups folder, I see the separate file pages with extension .one, but where is the main file?  Which file extension should the main file have?  What is a .onetoc extension?  I've tried googling, asking co-workers, and poking around in Windows Explorer, but I can't get clear on where and how OneNote stores files.  I appreciate any explanation that will help me explain this to a student when the question is asked.

Double click on .one doesn't work:
To be sure: This works only if there is a .onetoc2 file in the same (notebook) folder.
I have OneNote 2010 and 2016, in these versions it works.
Backup has intentionally no .onetoc2 file. Recovery from backup is oriented at the section level.
I assume your current notebook is Intro to OneNote. To find it on your hard disk (its path) either let your mouse hover over the notebook in the left pane or right click on it and select Properties.
BTW: Notebooks you are using daily should never be closed. Just close OneNote.
I repeat myself: a notebook is a folder, not a file.

First statement:
We talk only about so called local notebooks. Local notebooks are stored on your computer, not in the cloud, aka OneDrive.
Second statement:
A local notebook is implemented as a folder within the Windows file system, which contains at least one or more sections, the .one files, and a Open Notebook.onetoc2 file.
Comments:
In your first screenshot one sees the content of a notebook named Personal (this is the containing folder with the name of the notebook). There is no "main file" !
A double click on Open Notebook.onetoc2 does what its name implies ... and the sequence of your sections in the GUI is stored in it.
The .onepkg file is a compressed complete notebook which is in the wrong place, it should be outside the notebook Personal's folder.
The structure of Backup in your second screenshot is similar to the structure of OneNote Notebooks in your first screenshot. Intro to OneNote is the name of the backed up notebook. The folder Working with ... is a section group which should contain one or more section files. The .one files are the backed up sections, including the backup date in their names.

Hi Bernd,
Thank you for your reply that helps a lot.  I end up with other questions:  Is it possible to open a notebook (and have it launch OneNote) from Windows Explorer?  If so, what do I look for in order to open a notebook in OneNote?
I know the usual way to open a notebook is to launch OneNote first.  But I am looking for a comparison to other programs like Word or Excel where you can open a file from within the program, or from Windows Explorer.  Can you do that with a OneNote notebook?
Thanks for helping me understand this.

Yes, you can.
Either double click the .onetoc2 file or any of the .one files in the notebook's folder.

Thank you.
I'm not trying to be a pain, but I still need to work some of this out.
- If I double click on one of the .one files, OneNote opens, but I get just that page (read only), not the whole notebook.
- There are no .onetoc2 files anywhere in the Backup folder
- The "Open Notebook.onetoc2"  file from the Documents folder, in the first screenshot above opens multiple pages - not in read-only - but it is not the right file.  I don't seem to have a .onetoc2 associated with my current notebook.
- From what I see, there is no way to open my entire notebook from Windows Explorer.
The method (from Windows Explorer) seems to be to open a page, then access the entire notebook from OneNote's list of notebooks, once OneNote is open.  Right??
I am having a tough time with this...  I assume it is because of the nature of OneNote that it cannot be just one file.  It is multiple different files on the system, then the software is what pulls all of that together to make it one cohesive notebook.  Do I have that right? (I think it is one of the first things you said in your first answer).  So I will consider it a moot point to try to look for what I inaccurately called a "main file" in Windows Explorer.   phew !!  Thank you for your patience.  If I finally got this now, I will mark all of your answers as Answered, since they all helped me to understand.
Thank you.
